Israel hits dead militant's home in Gaza
Israeli warplanes on Thursday attacked three targets in Gaza, including the home of a top Islamic Jihad militant who was killed last week, Palestinian officials said.Israel Defense Forces confirmed that the country's air force had
carried out the strikes. Neither the IDF nor Islamic Jihad officials
had any word on whether anyone was killed. The damaged home was
located south of Gaza City and belonged to senior Islamic Jihad
militant Muhammad Abdullah, sources inside the group said.Abdullah, 43, was killed last week in an airstrike. At the time, the
Israeli Prime Minister's Office said Adbullah was a senior leader of
the Islamic Jihad in central Gaza and was in charge of manufacturing weapons, in particular rockets and mortar shells. The second airstrike on Thursday was also south of Gaza City. The third was near the southern city of Khan Yunis.
Earlier in the day, Israel
carried out another attack in Khan Yunis, firing a tank shell into a
house and killing five militants and two civilians, Hamas security
sources said. The militants belonged to Islamic Jihad and Hamas, the
sources said.Hamas seized control of Gaza in June.
In its account, Israel Defense Forces said Israeli troops were
operating in Khan Yunis, near the Israeli-Gaza border, when Palestinian
militants fired at them. The two sides exchanged gunfire before an Israeli tank fired on a house the militants had entered, IDF said.
Separately, IDF reported that a rocket fired from Gaza landed in the northern part of the city of Ashkelon.
The Hamas military wing, Izzedine al-Qassam Brigade, fires hundreds of
rockets across the Gaza border into Israel each year, often prompting
Israeli military responses, including attacks targeting Hamas military
leaders.
