Emily Hilscher: In Memoriam
UPDATE: A NowPublic member has made us aware of a charity accepting donations in Emily's name. Rawldogs.org, a no-kill dog shelter in Emily's hometown of Rappahannock is accepting monetary donations in lieu of flowers. The member who alerted us of the charity said, "So [that's] why Emily is cooler than I am--because of all the organizations they could have picked for her memory they picked the coolest possible one." Emily was studying to be a veterinarian when she was killed at Virginia Tech.
Those people who wish to make free donations can do so by searching for Rawldogs.org through Goodsearch.com.

As many now know, Emily was one of the first victims of the shooting. A Facebook Memorial put up shortly after her death has grown exponentially since yesterday's shootings; it has 420 members and 177 wall posts.
Previously it was thought that Emily may have some connection to the shooter, and that she may have been his initial target. Emily's close friend Tommy Pendleton, who created the memorial page, posted the following message:
EMILY HILSCHER IS NOT RELATED TO THE SHOOTER IN ANY WAY REGARDING A SERIOUS RELATIONSHIP. SHE WAS IN LOVE WITH KARL THORNHILL.
Karl Thornhill is a Radford student, and was made an administrator of Emily's Facebook group today.
The Rappahannock Voice, Emily's hometown newspaper, reported her death yesterday.
Emily Hilscher, a 2006 graduate of Rappahannock County High School and
a freshman at the Blacksburg, VA college, was confimed dead by county
authorities. She is the daughter of Elizabeth and Eric Hilscher who
live on Rock Mills Road. Her parents were driven to Blacksburg Monday
afternoon by a friend, after information began filtering up from the
college community that Emily may have been a casualty.
Emily was a freshman in Animal Science and an accomplished horsewoman. She was 18.
