Encompassing the Globe - A don't-miss exhibit at the Sackler Gallery
Every American knows about Columbus' discoveries. Fewer people are aware of the amazing impact the Portuguese had on the world during 16th and 17th centuries. Portuguese explorers roamed the globe, trading, visiting new shores, discovering new civilizations, new countries, and new continents, while bringing new ideas, new peoples, and new sources of wealth.
The Sackler Museum has mounted an astonishingly impressive array of more than 250 rare and precious artifacts, including a portrait from Goa, lacquer stirrups from Japan, a carved spoon from Nigeria, a feather crown from Brazil, a silver crown from the Azores, a cup made of rhinoceros horn from China, a raffia hat from the Congo, a drawing by Albrecht Duerer, and a gold incense burner from Germany.
The exhibit opens on June 24th and closes on September 16th.
