The English National Opera launched a blog based social media site
dripping with Web 2.0, AJAX and multimedia to support their production of
Bizet's opera Carmen, directed by Sally Potter. This is a very different type of website to the ones they usually produce to support shows. Is this the first time
a major performing arts venue has used social media to track events happening at other sites using a timeline tool?

That's a really good idea, in my opinion. As a performing artiste myself, I'm as interested in what goes into the production as in the production itself... The blog, at the moment, is not much more than a series of ads, not giving us much insight into the nuts and bolts of creating an opera for one of the world's most prestigious stages. The framework is there, but I think that the ENO can take it a step further, especially if (as would seem to be the case) they're wooing a younger crowd; I like how the young persons' discount now extends to 30 years of age!

Thanks Jordan. I'm hoping we can get some more content in there and start linking out today - we launched 'cold'.

The back story will be fascinating, and even more so with Saly Potter involved.

I'd be generally interested in seeing other examples of Arts organisations doing exciting 'next web' stuff - it seems to be a neglected market - or have I missed something?

Hi Jordan, Hi Tim,

I am coordinating the uploading of video content to this page - just to let you know, there are already two more videos up there, and one more to come by the end of the day - so keep watching: we are on the case!

I really enjoy the two videos that went up today - they are from the lead male singers' auditions.  The background is pretty plain and they are singing without costume, lighting, scenery, chorus, or even anyone opposite them and yet these two men really communicate something with their voices and actions.  I've watched them over and over and still get a tingle up my spine - and I'm not just saying that!  I really wish I could sing this well.

Anyway, just thought I'd keep you posted.  Be good to know your thoughts as more goes up in the coming weeks.  As the production escalates into full swing so will we.

Oh - and there are a couple new blogs - one from the artistic director which gives a great insight into the kind of life he leads and one fabulous one written by Sophie Mayer from Vertigo Magazine which talks all about the different incarnations of Carmen the internet throws out at you when you search.  This includes a character fro the L Word, Carmen Electra, robotics projects and a singing orange.

All best wishes,

Rachael Castell, Adventure Pictures
