David Duchovny says addicts have "given drugs a bad name".

The "Californication" actor insists illegal substances such as cannabis can be used safely without the risk of getting hooked.

David said: "I have different feelings about cocaine and marijuana. Marijuana rarely leads to violence in my experience.

"The 12-step program may have helped thousands of people, and I am all for that, but addicts give drugs a bad name for people who can actually do them, handle them and not get addicted.

"People want to rush and say, 'He is an addict.' "

David, who was known for his womanizing ways before he married actress Tea Leoni, also denied he has ever fantasized about being a vagina.

He said: "I do not fantasize about being a vagina. I might have said it but I lied.

"Get married was a turning point in my life. When you are married you have to deal with yourself. You can't heal your pain with drugs and other women. Or should that be women and other drugs?"
