Alicia Keys Salutes Dancehall At AMA 2007
Los Angeles, California :
The 24th hosting of the American Music Awards took place at The Nokia Center in Los Angeles on Sunday. Hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel from the “Man Show” and supported by a host of celebrity presenters, the event showcased performances from popular artistes across the American music soundscape. Notable awards went to Beyonce who receive the organizations
“International Award For Excellence” representing the density of her popularity and influence on American culture worldwide. Its usual hoopla was overturned however, in the second half by R&B Songstress, Alicia Keys whose reggae rendition of the hit single “no one” during the event literally broke barriers. Backed by a reputable contingency of old and new School dancehall artistes including, Junior “one blood” Reid, Beenie Man, and legendary dancehall duo, Chaka Demus and Pliers.
Her version of the Phenomena known as “dutty wine” made it prime time, and came off authentic and tasteful.
With millions of middle and upper class North American Caucasians as the programs primary target group, Reggae and Dancehall got exposed to a whole new market. In the words of Jamaican TV personality…. Uptown !!White America.
Nuff Respect My Girl!!!
Other highlights included Caribbean song queen Rhianna, who accepted the AMC’s favorite R&B Female Artiste Award, Akon who took home the Male category, and Bone Thugs n Harmony who took the favorite Hiphop/Rap Duo category.
