This is how New Year's day looks in the city of Nara, Japan. The girl, Madoka, is dressed in a traditional kimono and we're touring some temples, as many do on this day.

New Year's Day 2007 at the Manhattan Beach Pier. I broke my ankle a few weeks prior to this shot and was jonesing BAD for the water. I had to resign myself to finding satisfaction in bearing witness to brah Dale riding a fine glassy face.

Several hundred people darting for the Atlantic at Savannah, Georgia's Tybee Island beach on New Year's Day. Our version of a Polar Bear Plunge.

On New Year's Day, the Japanese flood shrines to make their first offering of the New Year. At the shrine in Asakusa, Tokyo, thousands of people struggled to make their way to the temple. When I finally got to the temple stairs, I turned and took this shot. I did eventually get to make an offering, but since it was so crowded, most people just threw their money haphazardly into the temple, and, since I was taller than most of the other people, I got hit in the head a few times with very heavy coins. Talk about ringing in the new year.
