Brasilia (ANTARA News) - The Brazilian government is to hand out 19.5 million condoms across the country during its upcoming Carnival to rein in transmission of sexual diseases, the health ministry said.
That is nearly double the number of free prophylactics distributed during last year's Carnival, AFP reported citing the health ministry.
The rowdy, raunchy party period is a national festivity during which music, skimpy clothes, street dancing and promiscuous sexual behaviour peak.
According to the health ministry, the government acquired one billion condoms in 2007 -- a quarter of the world's production of the sheaths. Brazil's population is 190 million. (*)
