NP Rank:
British City Briton To Ban Murder Music
UK Bureau:-
The city of Brighton in the United Kingdom has swung its full support behind its largely gay population by instituting a new law targeting “murder music.”
The new law will come into effect as part of the city ratification programme, aimed at updating the city council licensing policy for venues, pubs and clubs.
Once the law comes into full effect, all music whether live or recorded deemed as murder music, could lead to the loss of license for any establishment which accommodates such music within its premises.
Last year the Concorde Club 2 club had to cancel a scheduled performance of Dancehall DJ Buju Banton, after it came under tremendous pressure from Brighton’s large gay community.
Speaking in a report to a UK based news agency, Chairman of the Council Licensing committee Councillor Dee Simson, cautioned the public that the new licensing structure was not to restrict free speech, but to hinder extreme cases of sexual and racial hatred from rearing its ugly head in the city of Brighton and its surrounding communities.
Peter Tatchell, a senior advocate for the gay rights group OutRage!, issued a statement, “Brighton council is to be congratulated for its decision to ban the performance of music that incites the murder of lesbians and gay men. “Free speech does not include the right to advocate the killing of other human beings.”
The law comes into full effect on January 13th 2008.
