NP Rank:
The Onion's Worst Band Names of 2007
It's that time of year--album releases slow to a crawl, the PR shuffle slows to a crawl, and editors and writers seeking filler and desiring easy holiday writing compile their Best and Worst of the year lists. Though you're likely to come across hundreds of these over the next month, take a moment to appreciate the Onion AV Club's selections--you won't be disappointed.
They've got a couple of doozies this year (including "Let it Die: 23 Songs That Should Never Be Covered Again") but my personal favourite is "The Worst Band Names of '07." Here's an excerpt:
Yo Moma's Big Fat Booty BandMental Afro
"FunkHopRock 4 the Soul"
Shout Out Out Out Out
Dyslexic Speedreaders
"What happens when 2 Hollywood rappers team up with a cracker from Oakland?" Don't ask.
The Asbestos Tampons

Malice In Wonderland

Poetic Justice League 4 America
The Hobbits Of The Shire
Uprise Of The Dope Fiendz

There are certain things you have to accept when you put the word out in your band name four times.

Lol. Some great "Worst Band" names...
I remember waaay back when the Bare Naked Ladies were on someone's Worst Band Name list. (They're still on mine).
In some cases, it pays (really well) to have a terrible name.

I always felt that Snow Patrol was a weak name for a band, too, but they've thrived in spite of it.

Neutral Milk Hotel...I never liked that one. Why not Acidic Milk Hotel? At least then it wouldn't be so pansy.

Neutral Milk Hotel is a rather strange name, but it fits well with the perfect music they create.

I have to admit the name Shout out out out out sounds kind of silly, but I was driven to the band because of their positive reviews. When I saw they were coming to town, I went to the show and really loved their sound. I ended up buying 2 LP's, but here's the truth: at no point -ever- I thought to myself "Hey maybe I should wear a t-shirt with that band's name on it?".
