NP Rank:
Oscar Nominations In, 'No Country' 'Will be Blood' Top List
I can't remember the last time there was such a glut of great movies and performances to choose from. It's going to be interesting to see who walks away with what.
My money is on 'No Country For Old Men' for best movie, Viggo Mortensen in 'Eastern Promises' for male lead and Ellen Page in 'Juno' for best female (I think that one will be a surprise win, just wait!).
What are your Oscar picks?
"No Country for Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood" led with eight Academy Awards nominations each Tuesday, among them best picture and acting honors for Daniel Day-Lewis and Javier Bardem — but whether any actors would show up was in doubt because of the writers strike.Other nominees for best picture were "Atonement," "Juno," and "Michael Clayton."
The nominees for best actor are George Clooney for "Michael Clayton," Daniel Day-Lewis for "There Will Be Blood," Johnny Depp for "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," Viggo Mortensen for "Eastern Promises" and Tommy Lee Jones for "In the Valley of Elah."

For the first time in "eons" I can say that I had seen almost all
the movies nominated (I have yet to watch No Country for Old Men, I was
in Argentina when it was released here in the US).
It is tough
for me to pick one, I really liked Atonment (I read the book some years
ago, a very compelling story), Daniel Day Lewis is very convincing in
There will be Blood, Juno was a big surprise, Michael Clayton is a good
movie (I like George Clooney so I guess I might be a little biased).
I
had seen also The Valley of Elah, excellent movie, it came and went
with no success though, Tommy Lee Jones gives a very good performance.
Persepolis, superb.
Difficult to pick a winner.... still I have to watch the Coen brothers' film.

For once, I'm pleased to be able to concur with the Academy's choices. I was blown away by 'No Country' and very pleasantly surprised by 'Michael Clayton' and 'Juno'. I'm eagerly anticipating seeing 'There Will Be Blood' this weekend but, with PT Anderson at the helm, Jonny Greenwood providing the soundtrack, and Daniel Day in the starring role, I have a feeling I just might enjoy it.
