Every year the pundits say, "This'll be the biggest year for blah blah blah..." Inauspicious start, guys and gals, with the ultimate creators of these projects still on strike: anything not already in the can or in post-production is therfore in jeapordy. Meanwhile, I disagree with their prediction for the top spot: this'll be an Indiana Jones year.

Few movies live up to the original promise of their trailers, but if only half of these films deliver this will be one of the most exciting years in cinema history.

If the Hollywood writers' strike ends quickly and amicably enough we may also be treated to a big screen outing from the High School Musical gang and Brendan Fraser's 3D take on the Jules Verne classic Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

In the meantime, here is our unscientific, best guess at some of the films that should be in everybody's end-of-year Top 50 come Christmas. All movies are scheduled for UK release in 2008.
