There was intense blaze this morning at 2:00 am which when dispatched firefighhters arrived they found the Durham Region Human Society facility completely engulfed in flames. The fire is respomsible for killing approximately 150 animals. The animals ranged from cats , dogs, guinea pigs , rabbit, mice and some snakes. Fire fighters were able to rescue eight dogs and two cats. Some of the rescued animals required care due to smoke inhilation.
The Durham Region Human Society is located in Oshawa, Ontario about 45 minutes or 60 kilometres east from the downtown Toronto area. This is a tragic story especially for animal lovers. The fire and cause are still under investigation. Priliminay estimates of the cost in damages is $250,000.
The staff of Durham's Human Society are deeply saddened by this tragic event.

Was this at night when there were no attendants to help get more of the poor animals out? Or did they just run out with no thought for their charges?

Yes, apparently it happened at around 2am when no staff was around.

How could you even think such a thing? Those who work and volunteer (the majority of staff in any shelter) at animal shelters are caring, giving people. They deserve your respect and gratitude for their efforts. Shame on you for posing this question.

Report from cnews:
McCartney, a Himalayan kitten living in an animal shelter east of Toronto, had recently been adopted. Before going home with her new owners, however, she was scheduled to have her broken tail amputated Wednesday morning. Tipsy, a chihuahua who had just been rescued from life in a garden shed, had also just been adopted. Her new owners were preparing to take her home next week, as soon as she was neutered.
McCartney and Tipsy perished in the blaze along with about 150 other cats, two more dogs and about 40 smaller animals like rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
"We're just devastated, we can't believe it's happened," said shelter manager Ruby Richards, adding grief counsellors have arrived to give support to workers.
Alison Cross, a spokeswoman for the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, called the event "horrific."
"Their life's work is towards animals and helping animals, and unfortunately this tragic fire has destroyed that," she said. "They spend their lives taking care of these animals, and something like this is really heartbreaking to see and hear."

Rescuing is something I have done for years, with different rescue associations. This is
really a hard blow. I send my sympathy to all the workers of the Humane society and the
fire and rescue for doing their best. I am so thankful the Police were able to save the few they did. That was above the call of duty, risking their own lives for our beautiful furry
animals.
I am so sorry this happened.
