17.8 hectares mangrove forest being rehabilitated

Mangrove forest functions to restrain tidal wave. Recently Jakarta mangrove forest is 376.52 hectares located in Angke Kapuk North Jakarta and Kepulauan Seribu district, 14 hectares of it has been scraped by sea water. Because of that, Jakarta Provincial Government through Department of Agriculture and Forestry and Jakarta Environmental Board will rehabilitate 17.8 hectares mangrove forest in sea shore in 3 years.

Jakarta Provincial Government will do supervision toward mangrove trees for 5 years (mangrove trees reach adult in 5 years). It hoped that residents are aware of mangrove tree importance as nature dike restrain tidal wave.

Today, mangrove trees planting activity, lead by Jakarta Governor, Fauzi Bowo, and 1500 volunteers of non government organization, society organizations, students and fishermen community.

According to Bowo, recently Jakarta has 376.52 hectares mangrove forest located in Angke Kapuk and Kepulauan Seribu. Those mangrove forests statuses are protective forest, fauna sanctuary, flora sanctuary, nature tourism park and mangrove area in Kepulauan Seribu Sea National Park. Protective forest of mangrove is 44.76 hectares wide, had been scraped 14 hectares, it needs rehabilitate.

Mangrove forest rehabilitation is one of Jakarta Provincial Government effort to fix ecological damage that happened since few times ago. During this time, Jakarta Provincial Government is being accused not care about the environment but response with reforestation. “Through this activities, it’s clear that Jakarta Provincial Government is care the environment, but it needs societies participation in socializing this activities do in every region,” said Bowo
