Earth Quake in NJ 2009

A minor earthquake rumbled through Morris County, New Jersey late in the day on Monday. The quake measured 3.0 and did not cause any reported property damage. Residents were shaken up, however, in what was likely the first earthquake many NJ residents have experienced in their lifetimes.

State Police Sgt. Stephen Jones said he received a slew of 911 calls immediately following the quake, but there were no injuries or major property damage reported.

Morris Plains officer Jeffrey Hochman said there were no significant reports other than a few homes that lost internet service and Candlewood Suites losing television service.

Earthquakes in the area are relatively rare. The last significant quake, according to the US Geological Survey occurred on February 28, 1973. That quake, rattling through the eastern coast of the US measured 3.7. Residents heard loud noises and rumblings, likely caused by the vibrations of the shaking buildings. While earthquakes are not commonplace in New Jersey, they can occur there, and in every state.

I only ever had the experience once in my life in Massachusetts. It was a small quake but it still sounded like a freight train and knocked things off of some shelves.

I am from NH and remember one or two extremely minor quakes. They felt more like a truck going by.  I also remember being told that New England was in for "the big one." I hope it doesn't happen any time soon.
