Beside to combat air pollution, The Jakarta Car Free Day, hopefully it will encourage policy reform on transport management. In the future Jakarta transport will be developed in balancing between mass public vehicle vs private car, between road base vs rail base...

The car free day program which is implemented by Jakarta Head of Local Environment Management Board (BPLHD) since 2006 is already raising the air quality in Jakarta. “The program has already raising the air quality in Jakarta by 45 days in 2006, 73 days in 2007, and 80 days up to January-July 2008,” said Budirama Natakusumah, the head of board, Thursday (17/7).

According to him, the program must be implemented at another road. “We’re holding the program at fourth week for province and second week for administration,” he added.

Natakusumah continued the requirements for road to implement car free day are location must be easy to access in big scale, passed by public transportation, and the location must be different with province and administration. “Emission test will be also held by preparing 216 workshops and 444 technicians,” Natakusumah continued.

At the same time, Jakarta City Council for D Commission Member, Arkeno, is asking the board to use all road potency in Jakarta to succeed the car free day program. “It can be doing by socializing the program at bridge on Jl Thamrin and Sudirman and emission test via running text,” he said.

Syam AG, I like this story. It's good stuff.

It is good news, In Germany they had Car free days in 1970 and commuter days, one week only the license plate with even numbers where allowed to drive and the next only the uneven numbers, it was to force reduction in fuel consumption and so people would start commuting and car charring to reduce pollution! Unfortunately though the program was scraped by the end of the 70th! Some thing that should be reimplimented!
