Huntsville & Tuscaloosa, Alabama: Emergency Not Over

Over 230 people have been killed in storms that raged across the South, and that number is expected to rise. According to Governor Robert Bentley, at least 131 of those deaths were in Alabama. Tuscaloosa is a scene of devastation after a mile-wide tornado tore through the city. Roughly a million Alabama residents are without electricity.

Madison County, AL has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on its residents until electricity is restored in the aftermath of a series of devastating tornadoes.

1,400 National Guard troops have been deployed throughout the state. Alabama's EMA (Emergency Management Agency) has tips for Madison County residents:

  • Stay home unless it's absolutely necessary, as gas stations will be closed.
  • Don't hoard: buy what you need.
  • Don't waste water, since the water system has been damaged.
  • Dial 911 for emergencies only. Police and medical services are stretched thin.
  • Don't go to the hospital unless you're severely injured.
  • "Tornado tourists", stay at home. You only get in the way.

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said it received 137 tornado reports around the regions, including 66 in Alabama and 38 in Mississippi.
