NP Rank:
Amali, the Giraffe With a Crooked Neck
Amali the giraffe from Tulsa Zoo Arizona is now known as the giraffe with the crooked neck, as she suffered some kind of neck injury when she was in transit from The Wilds park in Ohio.
Vets at the Tulsa Zoo fear that her neck may never heal properly; she has been kept in medical quarantine since October 18th and is still undergoing treatment. It is thought that she is not in any pain however and vets are hoping that her neck will heal naturally. See a photo of Amali's crooked neck.
"When Amali the giraffe walked off the trailer into her new home she could walk, eat and manoeuvre normally," said Dr. Backues.
"Amali was initially treated for muscle fatigue and possible soft tissue trauma.
"We are using medications a human might use if they strained their neck or back, such as non-steroidal ant-inflammatories similar to ibuprofen, muscle relaxers, pain relievers (analgesics) and a vitamin supplement.
She is set to have an x-ray next week. A giraffe's neck is very strong and contains strong ligaments and bones, but in Amali's case, the alignment of her neck has been affected and she is now more susceptible to injuries such as muscle fatigue, tendon trauma or damage to the ligaments.
Amali seems to be coping well though, but will remain in quarantine until further tests are done to determine if she will be able to act and function normally. It is hoped she will join her new herd at the zoo soon.
