Amsterdam Canals Freeze Over: Ice Skating Videos
Brutal European Winter Freezes Amsterdam's Canals
Amsterdam's famous canals have frozen over for the first time in 15 years. Europe has had a heinous winter so far, as Romania and the Balkans get literally buried in snow.
Meanwhile, on the edge of the North Sea, Netherlands is also getting unseasonably cold weather, but not as much snow. Locals have found that the city's canals have turned into massive skating rinks, and they took advantage of the situation.
Below you will see some video footage of Amsterdam canal-skating. The first is by Jaap van den Biesen and Justin Knaven, and has a bit of production value behind it. The others, also worth watching, are quick videos of a surreal day on the ice: if you're skating up Prinsengracht, you can't get hit by a tram.
