Trees inspire awe in me. They hold so much and stand with such extraordinary grace and unhidden truth. The beauty of their buds unfurling in spring makes my heart smile and my soul weep with gratitude for life, the dappled light of trees in summer makes me dance and sing, the slumber of deciduous trees in winter helps me to slow down and find my stillness. Trees amaze and inspire me all the time. Ancient trees have something extra. Ancient trees touch the web with such wisdom, such vision, such depth of knowing, that to be in the presence of one is deeply humbling and inspiring. Ancient trees give many Druids, myself included, a pure draft of clear, delicious Awen. What can we possibly give in return? How can we honour them?

The National Trust hopes to find 40,000 of them during the three-year project.

Ancients trees provide unique habitats that support a wide range of rare species, which will be at risk if the trees are allowed to die, say experts.

The data will be fed into a national record, managed by the Woodland Trust, which is available online.

The above link is about some trees in the USA that were declared historical monuments. And some of you might remember the famous "tree sitter" in Berkeley California who tried to prevent the removal of a tree on the University of California campus to make way for construction. The tree sitters loss, but it did raise awareness of the preservation of the oldest living things on earth.

Living in Northern California, I am keenly aware of the preservation of ancient trees. Some of the oldest trees are found here. But the oldest tree in the world is a Spruce that was discovered in Sweden in 2008. The link below has the story.

We need trees and all vegetation for photosynthesis in which plants produce their own carbohydrates in the presence of chlorophyll and light. Carbon dioxide and water convert to carbohydrates and transorm light energy into stored chemical energy. The byproduct of this is free oxygen. They give us the air we breathe.

We can honor them by supporting reforestation projects and buying wood from companies that actively replant what they cut down.

We can honor them by not buying woods like teak that have been harvested in rain forests.

We can honor old growth forests and preserve them as living monuments of our respect for the natural world.
