NP Rank:
Are there any environmental improvements in the Canadian budget?
The Canadian government released their budget yesterday, and it contained, according to the govenment, the largest 'green' plan in Canada's budget history.
However, elements of the budget fell short of expectations according to critics.
In the budget, more than $3 billion was set aside to develop clean technology, and build environmentally friendly infrastructures and improve the efficiency of people heating their homes.
This collectively adds up to the biggest enviromental plan in Canada's budget history.
However, critics of the budget are saying that the plans fall short in a number of areas, such as expanding public transit, and not enough money on funding renewable energy plans, and too much money being devoted to the Alberta oil sands.
There is currently a five-year $1 billion clean energy plan in place, but the government has also allocated $292 million to help develop the CANDU nuclear reactor. Canadians criticizing the environmental platform of the budget, seem to think that the biggest problem is that at this rate Canada will not be able to keep up with the platform set by Barack Obama to the south. Obama has already said how he is going to double energy production from renewable sources in three years; Canada doesn't have an aggressive plan in place like that.
The government has said that they want 90 percent of energy by 2020 to come from renewable sources, but that is not as aggressive as our neighbours to the south.

Coming up on the Syncrude oil sands operation from the south. The Boreal Forest gradually gives way to cleared forest, then to lands where the topsoil has been cleared and then the 80 metre deep oil sands mines. The postage stamp of a truck on the road is one of the giant trucks with a 400-tonne payload. More than 3,500 sq. km. of lands have been leased for mining operations like this.
