Audubon Society Sets Standards For Habitat Destruction!?
Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, Canada
Opinion
More on the ongoing saga of the Cable Bay Chronicles. A large, fragile forest is the subject of controversial development by out of province land speculators. The promoters have billed this land as Cable Bay Golf Resort and Spa. It's not zoned for golf, resort or spa, but they have been working very hard to lobby for a change in zoning despite protests from local residents. They are currently offering lots for sale starting at $650 000 and ranging to over $2 million. This proposed development of thousands of units will not be a community, but rather an enclave for the rich and very rich.
The Cable Crew have tried a new tactic to change the community's mind about destroying rare habitat. In the local free paper, The Nanaimo News Bulletin, a letter to the editor from a Gary Browning states that he is designing an environmentally sensitive golf course. He claims to have degrees in science and environmental planning and design. Whew, what an authority! He further claims to have used the standards set by the Audubon Society for golf courses.
This came as a huge surprise to me, as I always thought that the Audubon Society promoted the preservation of habitat and protection of wildlife. I've got to say I was pretty disappointed too, knowing that the peregrines, piliated woodpeckers and many other birds would be evicted by a golf course. It doesn't take anything more than common sense to know that native habitat is always destroyed by these developments.
Then my faith in the Audubon Society was restored. There is another organization - Audubon International - whose business is golf courses. Is this another case of the Cable Crew not knowing their a---- from their elbows?

Barbara McPherson, thanks for this interesting and important local story. The challenge of balancing development and growth with environmental responsibility is going to be a major issue both morally and practically for coming generations.
