An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale hit parts of Sumatra on Sept 12, with major damage suffered in villages on the Mentawai Islands.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Greg Hunt, said residents of the Mentawai Islands needed support to start putting their lives back together.

"The building kits, which contains items such as a hoe, pliers, saw, hammer, axe, nails, buckets and wire will be a helping hand for the Mentawai people to do this," Hunt said.
