The little white house on the corner (Avoca, Wisconsin) has been in the Bollinger family for generations. Today, the 4th and 5th generations are cleaning out the first floor and pumping water from the basement. The force of the water created one very large sinkhole and a new passageway into the house. Unfortunately, several feet of water were the first to use the new entry. “Grandma would be 100 years old in April,” Laura Bollinger says with a twinkle in her eyes, “and us kids visit the house every weekend. The first thing we do is put the American flag on the pole and it’s the last thing we take down before we leave.” In a town covered with the remains from a several foot water surge, the crisp, clean American flag stood out as tall and proud as any national symbol. The gentlemen took a break, just long enough to display their proud service tattoos and review drinking water and clean-up materials. Today, they were a proud troop, bravely removing household articles, which date back into the early 1800’s. “It’s a sad day for all of us, I guess the best thing is we discovered beautiful wood floors which have been covered by carpet for years, of course, they will have to be cleaned,” she concluded. It just goes to prove the spirit to drive forward and restore the Bollinger homestead for the next generation is alive and well.
