Baby koala beaten to death by sick mob near Brisbane

A BABY koala has been bashed to death and thrown in a rubbish bin and another koala and its baby were beaten with rocks and sticks.

A man walking his dogs in Jim Akers Park in the northern outskirts of Brisbane made the horrific discovery of the bloody and beaten koalas on Friday night.

The shocking case of animal cruelty has appalled Anika Lehmann, from Caboolture Koala Care and Rescue, who said that just days earlier live magpies had been found in the area nailed by their wings to trees.

It is believed a gang of young men is behind the attacks.

In Friday's incident, the rescue group had managed to save the injured female koala and her joey.

However, another joey had died earlier, suffering a broken right arm, crushed skull and damaged eye.

"He weighed about 300 grams. I mean, what a hero to do something like that to a baby koala," Ms Lehmann said.
