NP Rank:
Ban bread as bird food - it does more harm than good
Apparently spending a lazy afternoon in the park feeding the birds and lying on the grass is not a great way to spend the day.
Bread should be banned as a bird food because it is unhealthy and dangerous and can even prevent chicks from surviving to adulthood!
I used to love saving the stale bread to feed to the birds when I was younger - this is really too bad, but we want to help them, not hurt them.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds said it holds little nutritional value and suggested instead giving them a range of alternatives, including cake crumbs, crushed biscuits, grated cheese, leftover jacket potatoes, breakfast cereal, overripe strawberries and porridge oats.
Granary breads with seeds are marginally healthier than cheap white sliced loaves but still simply fill the birds up without doing them enough good.
Experts say the issue is particularly important at this time of year, when young are being raised.
Val Osborne, head of wildlife inquiries at the society, said: “There are many other household foods that would be much better for them.
“Bread doesn’t actually contain any of the vital ingredients to provide birds with the energy they need to breed and fee.
“The RSPB is asking people to consider alternatives such as porridge oats, cake crumbs and potatoes.”
The advice was mainly aimed at those people who feed the birds in their back gardens.
However, it is also applicable to swans and ducks found on lakes, ponds and rivers which might be fed by the public.
Feeding by the public has become important in recent years, particularly for species like the cirl buntings and tree sparrows, which struggle to find enough food in the wild.
The traditional experience of feeding birds with handfuls of breadcrumbs is familiar to generations of children and parents.

amyjudd, I like this story. It's good stuff. Gee AMy, feeding Flying Rodents (Pigeons) just breeds disease, though Bread may not be the best, their recommendation feeding them grains, such as porridge oats, and rice certainly would do way more harm. We have all seen oatmeal expand when cooked with liquid. You can just imagine what that would do to a Flying Rodents stomach and bowels. As for Cake, well if Pigeons didn't have diabetes , they certainly would after eating sugary cake, as for taters, well starches aint to bowel friendly either on our feathery creatures. Birds for the most part are carnivoires, Best to feed them worms or nothing at all.

It's loads of fun, feeding these birds, watching them hop and twatter, being so joyous with our food; I didn't know it was *bad* for them! Thanks for enlightening me, I'll be saving other produce to fill their needs, instead of bread. :)
