Banaue Rice Terraces in the Philippines is one of the UNESCO heritage sites found in the country. It is a traditional way of planting rice where the 'steps' are the fields being plowed for rice to grow.
The irrigation system depends on rain and free flowing from the mountains. The edge of the steps is where the farmers or local people step on or mainly the path to walk around the field.

The photo was taken during my first visit to Mountain Province in April 2000 (summer), together with 4 other friends from Cebu. The location of the heritage site is almost 3 hours walk from the main road.
