I think it is ridiculous to regulate local food sales or farm gate sales to the point they become illegal. Do you have some more details on the new Law?
I am sure the concern is in unregulated health matters like e-coli/ bird flu/ even west nile. However, I have been on large scale poultry operations and I'll take a backyard free range chicken any day !
mtippett, I like this story. It's good stuff. This local food issue becomes even more relevant in light of the Listeria outbreak in our prepared meat. Some people have been killed by this organism, but we won't know the full extent of this until any pregnant women exposed, give birth. The law regarding poultry came into effect Sept. 07. It is illegal for me to sell you a plucked and cleaned chicken from my healthy flock if it has not been processed in a government approved slaughterhouse. I can sell you a live chicken and then offer to clean it for you for free. You are not allowed to sell eggs off your farm if they have not been graded. In BC, you are allowed to keep a maximum of 99 chickens per farmer on your farm. I won't get started on the new slaughter regs for mammals. It has meant that many small farmers have ceased to raise free range animals altogether.
Yeah this is a big problem. BTW, I have started an urban food channel on NowPublic. If anyone is interested in helping me edit it, please let me know. Cheers, Michael.
