Beautiful live oaks butchered by power crews, post-Gustav

It's very apparent the crews repairing the electric lines in New Orleans after Gustav blew through have no landscape architecture training. One area in the Seabrook neighborhood in Gentilly, along Franklin Avenue have gigantic gouges taken out of 50+ year old live oak trees to allow electric lines to be unencumbered. Is the US the only country that doesn't bury its utilities, such as power lines?
The normal live oak is the fourth photo on the bottom. I imagine the tree trimmer's task sheet says, job complete.

DrMarty, I like this story. It's good stuff. Where the power lines down? is that why they slashed out the center? I never understood why an Oak tree would be planted under a power line, let alone near a sidewalk where they can lift up the pavement. There is no denying that the Oak is a spectacular tree and does provide wonderful shade and a welcoming feeling to a street but like you said it is devastating when the center is cut out of the tree.

The power lines might have been down. Not sure of the history of tree planting, power line installation and sidewalk paving. The neighborhood was established in 1909.

Are there any rumblings about Ike coming up the gulf coast?

I think everybody will be more concerned if it passes under Florida and into the Gulf as projected, but not until then.

Canada doesn't bury its power lines either. It's annoying.

Rene...you don't know this, but I was made aware of nowpublic when I searched for photos of the July 23 oil spill in the Mississippi River. Thanks. It's been fun.

DrMarty, I like this story. It's good stuff. sounds so much like the karachi electric cable repairers who are ever-happy to chop down branches, even entire trees, if they are perceived as 'coming in their way'!
