Beijing introduces odd-even car ban

Photos

With the Olympics and Paralympics behind them, Beijing is back to normal - congested as always.

Beijing was grinding back to its congested normal on Saturday after two months of traffic restrictions and factory closures which kept the city's notorious pollution at bay for the Olympic and Paralympic games.

The Chinese capital is one of the world's most polluted cities and there has been widespread debate about whether the traffic control measures should be retained.

Although the Olympic regulations do not officially expire until midnight on Saturday, cars with both odd and even number plates were already on the streets of central Beijing by mid-morning.

It is clear that in such unforgiving climates, the daily commuters don't want to suffer the trek in open air conditions. So whether it be by public transit or by car, it is clear that people will need to find a way to escape the heat.

Too bad - it didn't last very long did it?

This photo was taken in June of 2007 In Beijing's 4th Ring. This is not just a bad day or rush hour traffic. This is normal, everyday traffic and a very common site in Beijing. Buses are often so crowded people are smooshed all the way up against the doors and windows, often hanging their heads out for fresh air. The Buses sometimes are too crowded to let more people on

jessica.lam, I like this story. It's good stuff.  I think Nancy Pelosi should lobby against China.
