Japan without Bicycle today would be like an Ocean without Water, unthinkable.

I am always amazed at how many Bicycle actually exist here and to see people of all ages and every social rank using them on daily base, being part of every once life as much as the daily cup of Green tea! Not only is it environment friendly but it keeps you in great shape as well. Maybe this would in part explain why Japan has the longest life expectancy in the World and why Japanese are for the most part rather physically fit and slim. I have been living here for some time now and I used to see Bicycles true out my life in West Africa and Europe, how ever Japan overshadows every one with the amount of Bicycles on the roads and in Parking areas. Every one has a Bicycle and every one seems to use it as well. There are Cars as well and way to many for my taste, yet even those Car drivers are also Bicycle riders for the most part any how! The exeptionally good public transport system does of course help to keep every one on there Bicycles at least from the train station or bus station back to home or to work.

With out the Bicycle Japan could not have reduced it air polution over the past 20 years as it did and things would be a lot worth for the public health sector as well.

The Bicycle is by far one of Humanities best invention and will contribute to counter polution as well as health problems. Every one should have a Bicycle and use it at least once a day!

We're very pro-bicycle in parts of the UK too. In Oxford, where I live, it's probably the primary mode of transport. I wouldn't be without my bike!

Thanks for the story. I like to hear about bicycles in other countries. I think they are one of the best inventions. It must be wonderful to cycle in Japan (other than in Tokyo perhaps). What are their cycle paths like in the city?

Paschen, I like this story. It's good stuff.  Riding a bike is like being a kid all over again!

Paschen, I like this story. It's good stuff. we have more cars added to our cities in pakistan, particularly in karachi, than bicycles. such a shame! the city government has recently built a number of flyovers and underpasses all over the city to accomodate the growing traffic. car loans from banks have facilitated car ownerships and a false sense of economic growth prevails. bicycles need to be glorified and promoted rather than the four-wheelers that guzzle high-priced fuel, but alas...
