Photographed at Dubbo Zoo, NSW, Australia..
Family : Rhinocerotidae
As recently as 1970, an estimated 65,000 Black Rhinocerus could be found throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
Tragically 90 percent of them were killed in eastern Africa during the 1970s. There are now fewer than 2,500 remaining, in pockets of Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya,
Namibia, and Tanzania.
One of the 4 sub-species, the West African Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis longipes) was declared tentatively extinct in the wild in 2006 but there were 8 known Western Black Rhinoceros alive in captivity - two in the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park and six in the Czech Republic.
First shots with new Sigma 120-400 Telephoto lens.
Looks to be a pretty good lens and when fully extended it is a monster lens.
These shots were hand held.Optical stabiliser seems effective.
