Surfers honor 1 year anniversary of BP oil explosion

One year after the BP oil spill, caused by the collapse of the Deepwater Horizon rig, the Gulf of Mexico is still in sorry shape. Dead dolphins are still being found, and BP is still not trusted with supplying real-life statistics on environmental impact. One thing is certain, though: there is a lot of oil still polluting the Gulf of Mexico.

Those in the fishing industry on the Gulf Coast are still hurting, and family businesses are going under because there are so few healthy oysters left to catch. Fishermen and their families are growing sick of the slow pace of settlement payouts.

BP is indeed spending a ton of cash in the gulf, but not on stuff like "paying off the settlement money". Suppliers are making a fortune by overcharging BP workers and contractors, since they know that BP has titanically deep pockets.

There are currently 48,000 clean-up workers in the Gulf Coast area and businesses such as Hyer's sell BP products as far-ranging as Tyvek coverall suits and kitty litter, with a 1000 percent increase in business.

Still, the pressure to resume deepwater drilling is intense, even if safety measures to prevent another Deepwater Horizon disaster are not in place.
