BP Oil Spill 2010 Update: 'Top Kill' Plan Approved

BP has begun the Top Kill effort to plug the still-leaking Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The announcement comes just after the US government announcement approving the plan. The Top Kill procedure began at 2pm EDT.

As per the Top Kill plan, heavy drilling liquids will be pumped into the blowout preventer in an attempt to stop the gas and oil leak. It will be many hours before anyone will know if Top Kill is having any positive effect.

Federal On-Scene Coordinator Rear Admiral Mary Landry and the Unified Area Command, acting on the validation of government scientists and in consultation with the National Incident Commander Admiral Thad Allen, have given approval to proceed with the top kill operation today to stop the flow of oil from the MC252 well in the Gulf of Mexico.
