BBC Weather - Sunday 10 June 2012 *MET OFFICE AMBER WARNING FOR RAIN ISSUED*

Parts of Britain are on flood alert today as more than a month’s worth of rain is expected to fall in just 24 hours.

Heavy rain drenched much of the country yesterday and this morning while forecasters predicted further thundery downpours this evening.

London and south east England are bearing the brunt of the wet weather today with up to 3in (80mm) of rain expected to have fallen by 6pm tonight.

In some areas, more than 2in (50mm) – the equivalent of the entire average rainfall for June – fell in just 12 hours overnight.

The Environment Agency has issued 33 flood alerts across England and Wales – 23 for south east England – as rivers filled to bursting point.

The Met Office also issued a severe weather warning covering London and the south east amid concerns over treacherous driving conditions and flood risks.
