seen along the road Bangkok-Pattaya but this is an issue allover Asia (INDONESIA to be mentioned especially!: http://naturealert.blogspot.com/ ). Not only illegal logging but also poachers and farmers (setting fires after the rice-crop) are setting fires everywhere to get rid of their waste causing hugh environmental problems affecting health, nature, wild live and air. And in spite of the presence of park- rangers (not enough and even not armed!) the battle is an ongoing because lots of profit is involved. Last week again 2 rangers were shot dead in the north doing their duty and one week later 2 burned to death working to try to make fire lanes to stop a fire.
The poaching and illegal logging has not been done by only the hill tribes living there for hundreds of years but even more caused by high(er) ranked people served by their helpers (bribing, corruption), unscrupulous, selfish and greedy for (more) money, destroying wild live and nature for hundreds of years or even extinguishing certain flora and fauna forever.

UPDATE: Linked to this story and as a farewell to the park rangers killed because they were doing their duty combined with their love for nature and wildlife I like to present a commemoration I found in the site of the WESTERN FOREST CONSERVATION CLUB. A commemoration to pay respect to the dedicated Thai conservationist Seub Nakasatiean who was shot dead 18 years ago only because he irritated certain people with his dedication. To honor him every year at September 1st lots of people from Thailand gather and honor him in the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildife Sanctuary.

“As well as every year, many people from everywhere in Thailand came in commemoration purpose and to pay respect to the important conservationist of Thailand who had devoted himself to urge people’s consciousness of natural resources and wildlife conservation. Also he was one who had made all his effort to ask for public cooperation on protecting the forest and wildlife. His isolate death with strong consistent objective and dedication has stimulated the conservationist in the following generation until now.

Besides officers from government section, many from private section, NGOs, including youth and students nearby came to attend the commemoration ceremony. After religious ritual, all the participants gathered at the commemorate monument of Seub Nakasatiean.”

Mistifarang, I like this story, albeit very appalling in nature.  Are they not aware of the consequences...or do they not care at all?

jayr, it's very complex: the poor farmers and poachers/illegal loggers are not aware and for them is surviving daily life more important. The education is very low.

Worse are the "big" people behind the organized legal and illegal logging and illegal poaching. Also the governments has to be blamed deeply like in Indonesia to give green light to hugh companies for logging to "cultivate" the areas for plantations as you can read, for example, in the blogspot of "Naturealert".

Like here, in Thailand, lots of land is disappearing to be of use or to fill the, already filled pockets, of certain people/families. Some government-organizations are fighting these very bad habits but it is sometimes difficult to get a finger behind bribing and corruption.

The interests are that big that planned killings and unplanned shootings are more common than uncommon!
