Bush: "Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter"

George Bush surprised world leaders with a "joke" he made at the conclusion of the G8 summit.

The American leader, who has been condemned throughout his presidency for failing to tackle climate change, ended a private meeting with the words: "Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter." He then punched the air while grinning widely, as the rest of those present including Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy looked on in shock.

This is an outrage.

There is no nation in the world that has done more to combat pollution than the US. If not for a Democrat congress even more progress can be made. The "biggest polluter on earth" is tired rhetoric, and a thinly-veiled attack on American capitalism.  If President Bush actually used those words, which I doubt very much, it was long overdue, and richly deserved, sarcasm of anti-American leftists.

I think, If Bush said these words, and I am seeing MSM news reports that he did, it was as you stated.  These is a perception that we are the worlds largest polluters.  In August, I think that perception will be changed a great deal, as Travelers to the cities of China will experience real pollution first hand

"If President Bush actually used those words, which I doubt very much,"

Right-- Keep living in your bubble with your hands over your ears saying "la-la-la"

"There is no nation in the world that has done more to combat pollution than the US."

Clearly you must be joking.

Soooo, what are you basing your argument to the opposite on?  Are you comparing how much the US pollutes versus other countries? Are you establishing a differential of the amount the US pollutes now versus how much it used to pollute?  Any credible facts ar all, or are you just spewing forth the kool-aid you couldn't keep down?

I think it is awesome.  I love his sense of humor.  Everybody is so uptight these days.  There are so many people that just want to hate everything he does.  It was a joke - I get it.  Godd one W.

Well, I'll concede that France has done a bit more with 75% of it's electricity provided by nuclear power plants, but beyond that, cities in  the UK, Italy, Mexico, and many others  have abysmal air quality. Bejing, China is notoriously bad.  I can't even imagine what Calcutta and Bombay are like.

Kyoto was never about saving the planet, was it?  Not a single signator  is meeting the goals.  On the other hand the US per/GDP is doing  better than anyone else.  Of course we can do better, and we will.

Look elsewhere, srmjjg. Your reality begins and ends with hatred of George W. Bush.  Hardly a sign of enlightenment.

I'm sorry you are so wrong.

But you must be used to it, you still support Mr. 28%.

Good day.

28 is a lot higher than 9 which is what the democratic led congress has.

So I take it you support the 13% approval rating Democratic lead congress.

This is an example of how that kind of Rhetoric will back fire on you.

NowPublic's Policy allows one to discuss the content of an article but not argue with the writer or a commenter.  Please keep your comments on subject.  There are points of view here.  You can disagree with a point of view and explain your rational. That way, readers can get a feel for all sides of a subject. This whole G8 summit crap is nothing more than an attempt to destroy our economy.  Luckily for all of us...Bush is not fooled by their attempts at bringing down America!  However, if Mr Obamaclinton gets in, we're all going to be in real economic trouble.  It'll be no more 'shining city on the hill' folks!

I can tell by your screen name that you love irony as much as I do.

Thank you and good day.

Bush did make some half-commitments... better than none. His attitude and choice of expression (not uncommonly) are extremely unfortunate, for ALL Americans. I voted Democrat, and still understand that BOTH presidential and congressional approval ratings are abysmal. They BOTH should be ashamed. This nation will continue to suffer until we come to grips that most of the political system in the US has become corrupt, on both sides of the isle. We have become people who predicate argument more on political ideology instead of personal principle. All politicians who cheat, lie, and steal deserve to be thrown out on their ear. This is the first step to getting people to understand that economic and environmental policy go hand in hand - they are interdependent, not mutually exclusive. Remember, in the end, there is no Republican or Democrat, only people. I say it's time to clean house.
