Can a Person Sink in a Lava Lake? Study at Lava Lake (Video)
A study in a lava lake to see if a person could penetrate a lava lake is tested with an organic waste bag.
Due to its high density, volcano lava is said to be able to withstand the weight of a person walking across a lava lake, but a study at an Erta Ale Volcano lava lake shows that from a certain distance, if a person fell into a lake, they could penetrate the surface, causing an eruption.
The test was performed with a box of camp waste (largely food rests) in a bin bag. Estimated weight of the box is about 66 pounds from a height about 260 feet above the lava lake. The lake reacts with violent lava fountaining activity, presumably in part due to steam produced from the organic matter.
