High Noon at Car Free Day

Car free day expanded this year to include many new neigborhoods.  I went down to Commercial Drive and witnessed the craziness from the birthplace of the movement.  Lots of fun.
Car Free Day is an annual festival which this year fills four Vancouver neighborhoods: Commercial Drive, Kitsilano, the West End, and Main Street. Without the noise, smell, and safety hazards of cars, the people of the city are able to come out and greet one another in public space with performance, healing arts, and of course vibrant commerce.

Commercial Drive has its own lovely vibe! I was happy to revisit its lively festivity.

I visited the one in the West End...it was good times. It made me realize how much Vancouver needs more open patios like the ones on the street that day.  If only these days were year-round, or at least summer-round.

Liberation BC was at Car Free Day in Vancouver to raise awareness about the ecological impact of eating meat. Did you know that it takes the same amount of water to shower everyday for a whole year as it does to make just one pound of meat? Think you can be a meat eating environmentalist? Think again. The amount of fossil fuel needed to produce a pound of meat is equivalent to driving an SUV for 64km! Now that's some food for thought!
