Cedar Farmers' Market Ends Successful Season
Cedar Farmers' Market ended another successful season on a sunny, warm October day. The Cedar Farmers' Market traditionally opens on Mothers' Day and closes Thanksgiving weekend. The Cedar Farmers' Market is located in the small village of Cedar a few miles south of the City of Nanaimo. It has for the most part retained its rural roots and has offered a market for about the past 15 years. Each year it adds a few more vendors.
The market is set up each Sunday in a field, sales start at 10 and end at 2. By three in the afternoon the tents are gone and no one would guess that a successful farmers' market had been there.
Locals know to hit the market at 10 sharp for the best selection. The offerings are from relatively small farms so at times the selection may be limited. One thing the shoppers can count on is fresh produce. Value added products are also for sale, like jams, hand made garden furniture, floral arrangements.
This weekend the market organizers held the Great Pumpkin Weigh In with bragging rights going to the grower of the heaviest pumpkin. If you are in the area next Mothers' Day, it's hard to beat a folksy outing to the Cedar Farmers' Market, especially on a sunny Sunday.
