Desert centipede - Order Scolopendrida Class Chilopoda:, Scolopendra morsitans"Come quick. Bring your camera. Quick." Fred and Frank were packing up the tent. "It's under the tent."
When I got there, this is what they showed me. An angry centipede. It didn't appreciate its shelter being removed. I managed to get a couple of photos before it went and hid next to the car tyre. We left it there so we knew where it was while we packed up the rest of our gear.
Fortunately our tent gets carefully zipped tight after entering or leaving.
The Aboriginal name of the Desert centipede is miniyarra.
Centipedes live in dark crevices under litter, rocks, logs and the bark of trees. They are mostly nocturnal. The dangerous part is the red head end, where the animal has its poison jaws.
