Chile Earthquake 2010: How to Contact Relatives in Chile
After the Chile Earthquake that struck Saturday morning with a magnitude of 8.8, people from all over the world are wondering how they can get in touch with relatives and friends that live in Chile to make sure they are okay.
Information is still scarce and not all the lines of communication are open at this time, but we will continue to update this post when we know more.
The U.S State Department has set up a number for Americans to call if they are looking for infomation about relatives and friends: 1-888-407-4747. This line will receive a high number of calls however so you may hear a recording.
On Twitter there is also a number circulating for emergency telephones in Chile: 568 1290 / 568 1295
The Red Cross does have a presence in Chile and thier contact numbers and addresses are available to the public. Please be patient, they are dealing with a high volume of work at this time.
Google has set up a Person Finder for the people of Chile, where you can either input information of someone you are looking for, or information about yourself or someone you know you may be looking for you, family or friends.
Twitter can also be a good source of information. The Chilean Red Cross has a Twitter account you can follow, or try searching Twitter with the hashtag #Chile as many others are also searching for information.
There is also a Chile Earthquake Facebook page for people to try and make contact.
We will update this post if more contact options become available.

We have friends from Tome and my parents came back home one week ago and they were staying in Bellavista, Tome. We haven't been able to contact anyone over there, the lines aren't working. I read on a Twitter blog that Dichato (close to Tome) is 80% flooded and that most of the people in Tome have fled to the hills. That's all I know. If I hear anything else I will let you know. I too am from Australia (Melbourne).

Apparently Radio Bio Bio has reported that water reached the central plaza of Tome. Apparently there's no electricity. That's all the information I have just found out from other people on Twitter.

I want to know how is now the town - is it completely flooded, is there any plan for food distribution? I don't hear any news about Tome except no water, no electricity, no gasoline, no phones

I was a Foreign Exchange Host Mom for a student from Concepcion, Chile. Ivan Ignacio Ramirez lived with us for 6 months in AR through an exchange service known as "Youth For Understanding". Ivan and his family live in Concepcion and I am very worried about him. He is now the age of 27 and he is a Physchiatrist that treats patients recovering from drug addiction. Ivan is also a professionl guitarist for a Hard Metal band in Concepcion. I do believe that his band has released a few CD's. All I have is an address and names, no current telephone number, if I could locate him via internet either through this site or even Facebook, that would be wonderful!! My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families and citizens of Chile during their time of need. Beth S. USA, Alma AR
