Cigarette Butts Are Litter

How many cigarette butts did I pick up on less than a 1/4 mile of a lightly trafficked road in Nashville, Tenn. this morning? 339. Some were fresh; some filters had lost their paper covering.

Cigarette butts are trash and are hazardous to our environment. Since most buildings are now smoke-free (which is great), butt litter has increased in outside locations.

Start a cigarette litter prevention program in your area. Keep America Beautiful has some ideas or come up with your own.

Good for you for cleaning up your neighbourhood - too bad that it was necessary, though.

Any ideas on how people can start up a litter prevention program?

I'm not sure how people got the idea that cigarette butts aren't litter, but that seems to be general consensus of smokers. Even when there are cigarette butt holders or cans, people still seem to put them on the ground/table/doorjam/shrub/flower pot. It is infuriating!
