Classifying Knowledge as Basic Necessity just Like Food!

Food (including drink), clothing and shelter are the well known basic necessities or physiological needs for human life. Now, time has demanded another basic necessity for sustaining human life; knowledge.

The world has become more dynamic, complex and volatile making life difficult to sustain than ever in history.  Difficult to predict the future and ascertain the basic physiological needs let alone the safety, social and other higher stage human needs! Thus, knowledge is the only solution to achieve the basic needs of man in our world today. We can, therefore, group knowledge as the fourth basic necessity for human life.

What is knowledge?

In my definition, knowledge is a commodity that can be produced, transferred and consumed. Like any commodity, knowledge is bought and sold and can be measured in monetary value in the market.

There are two types of knowledge; academic and experiential. Academic knowledge is produced through academic research while experiential knowledge from experience. Both can be stored (e.g. books, and any medium of storage), transferred (education, training, etc) and consumed (applied on work). Both are essential as academic knowledge enables one to frame problems/opportunities to solve/exploit while experiential knowledge enables to design and implement opportunities or design and solve problems.

Knowledge Transfer

It is high time that knowledge transfer be practice-based in order to enable the knowledge receiver to be engaged into practice, avoid fear, take risks and challenge this dynamic, complex and volatile world. Practice-based education can build both emotional buy-in and intellectual buy-in at the same time on the knowledge receiver. This makes the knowledge receiver a champion in her tackle of the challenging world.

Governments Responsibility

The minimum responsibility expected from governments is to fulfil their society’s basic needs. As I mentioned earlier, it has come too difficult to the bottom of the pyramid (the billion poor) to fulfil their basic needs i.e. food, clothing and shelter without having the instrument of the invisible knowledge. Thus, governments need to be well aware to transfer quality and practice-based knowledge to their society than ever not only with the conception of building capacity but also fulfilling the minimum needs of a society to enable them maintain their livelihood.

Dear Mr. Belayneh:

Thank you for your opinion and you are absolutly right that knowledge is a basic necessity. But in this more dynamic world what is most important is POWER. If one has power then it is outhomatic that he/she has everthying. Power opens the door of heaven. So, I personally suggest to empower the poor and other segements of the public if we want to ensure a healthy and sustanable social environment. Knowledge Simply, knowledge comes with power, food comes with power, happines comes with power, democracy comes with power etc. etc. Knowledge is partly a commodity and partly a blessing of the Almighty. So, as long as one has POWER he/she can secure, al least, commercial knowledge. But commercial knowledge alone cannot buy a piece of bread or cloth. A blessing of God MATTERS MOST.

I thank you Ms Rhonda J Mangus!

Please, voice this issue to the world so that  knowledge can get attention by governments as Basic Necessity and should fulfil to their society.

As information is classified and added as factor of production to the old Land, Capital and Labour. knolwledge should also be classified and added as Basic Necessity to human life just as Food, Clothing and Shelter!

All knowledge comes from reason, the most important asset humanity has is our ability to reason.

But, people are no longer using it. They wait around for other people to put A and B together for them.

Humanity must unlock their logic skills again, or who knows how bad things are going to get.

A perfect example is when someone has so many preconceived notions and opinions, that they throw out any new facts and ignore ones they already have that threaten their false world view.

A complete absence of deductive reasoning, they only use facts that fit their opinion, instead of formulating opinions that suit the complete facts.

Sometimes people can't admit they don't know everything or facing a realization that the world is not as they thought it was, is too traumatic.

Thank you for your comment. However, your comment seems that people need to apply their inborn intellectual potential in real life situation, if I am not misunderstood you

My argument is that people need to be motivated or even assisted for formal education by their governments. Facilities for education need to be built. Formal education be it school based academic or practice-based education facilitated by governments is essential in order for people to work and live.

I argue that a government that is not feeding its society is too weak that should be condomned. In order to feed its society, the best too the government should provide is education; knowledge.

I wasn't disagreeing with you, I believe a big part of the problem is that children are not taught to reason anymore. Schools just spoon feed information, without challenging students. When someone is so used to just having it handed to them, they don't need to learn for themselves. They aren't exercising their deductive skills.

They become dependent on having information given to them, and they don't try too find it for themselves.
