The Coca-Cola company has invented a new plastic bottle that is partly made from sugar cane and molasses.

The company plans to test the new bottle in North America.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Coca-Cola Co said on Thursday it has developed a new plastic bottle that is partly made from sugar cane and molasses, raising the bar in the battle for the most environmentally friendly packaging.

Coke will test the new bottle in North America with Dasani bottled water and certain carbonated brands later this year. The test will expand to the vitaminwater brand in 2010.

30 percent of the eco-friendly bottle will be derived from sugar cane and molasses the company said.

Coke said that 30 percent of the new "plantbottle" will be derived from sugar cane and molasses, which is a by-product of sugar production.

Coke's competitors PepsiCo Inc and Nestle are also introducing lighter-weight bottles that use less plastic.

Rival beverage makers PepsiCo Inc and Nestle are also introducing lighter-weight bottles that use less plastic.

It wouldn't be a bad idea at all if the company takes steps to not only reduce sugar but also other ingredients which can be harmful that they use in making the drink. I remember reading sometime back the company using sodium benzoate which was believed to be harmful.

It is about time. In the 50s they where far more eco friendly then they are today.

I think too that this is a good move by the company. Hope they also consider using ingredients which are healthier.

My first response was that this is just a marketing ploy.

I'd rather have the molasses in the drink and the high fructose corn syrup as part of the bottle. Corn can be used to make plastic.

I didn't know that corn can be used to make plastic. That's interesting. Thanks.

It almost seems like you could melt the bottle down and eat it! (I won't, but it seems like it) :)

If this is the new two liter bottle, didn't anyone at Coca Cola check to see if it would fit into the door of a fridge? Doesn't stand up on the bottom shelf either. Warm Cock...yuk.....do I have to tip it sideways and make sure it doesn't leak out? This is messy...
