How widespread is the pine beetle problem? Colorado is in major forest fire danger this summer and beyond. This infestation has been going on since 1996 in Colorado (and British Columbia). It's just starting to get widespread coverage in Colorado now that the forests are visibly changing. Look for pine beetles to gobble up a forest near you soon.
Colorado's fast-spreading infestation of bark beetles has killed 1.5 million acres of lodgepole pines and could largely wipe out the state's lodgepole forests in three to five years, state and federal forest officials said on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008. (AP Photo/Ed Andrieski, file)
