I was glancing at the birds feeding on the balcony today. My favorite is an old timer, a cardinal that has lost most of his top notch to old age and he features gray feathers mixed with his red plumage. It makes a nice style and while he is clearly an old bird, he still has spunk at the feeder.

Most of the birds here are sparrows and doves. Sparrows are not all alike. There are at least several varieties represented in this flock. A little more look up and I can see many more possibilities.

What is the news value from considering sparrows?

“The importance of 'inner values' -- female sparrows test the genetic make-up of their mates

How females select sexual partners is a significant concern to many males. The focus has gradually switched from the idea that certain males are the most attractive to considering that particular individuals might be intrinsically compatible. Recent results from Herbert Hoi and colleagues at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, suggest that -- at least for sparrows -- genetic considerations play a large part in the selection of mates. The work is published in BMC Evolutionary Biology.

This is a test to see if the common house sparrow can garner more attention than Mitt Romney.
