NP Rank:
cruise ship takes away public access to river
Once again the public stands to lose more waterfront to cruiseship terminals and lose access to the historial river of the st. johns. In effect Jaxport along with the cruise industry demand a security zone accross the river that prevents any small boat, row boat from fishing withing 700 feet of a dock owned by jaxport. When did the public give up their right to fish anywhere along the river? check out the new rules and case in point.
NOTICE TO ALL BOATERS!!!!!!!
"Yesterday's incident was extremely dangerous and was a violation of navigation rules. It was also a violation of federal laws that prohibit vessels from coming within 200 yards in front and 100 yards behind or to the sides of a cruise ship that is underway. Violators are subject to fines up to $32,500.00," said Lieutenant Commander John Hennigan, Chief, Waterways Management Division for Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach.
This could happen in Mayport!

Factory Billet, a 51' Outerlimits, and XXX a Cigarette 42x, participate in the Annual Jacksonville River Rally. As one of the largest boating events of its kind, the festivities draw participants from all over the country to enjoy a weekend in the Florida sunshine and boating on the beautiful St. Johns River.

Lively Mayport history is about to be bulldozed for cruise ships:
There is evidence that humans lived and exploited the marshes in and around the St. Johns river inlet 10,000 years ago, so all Europeans are latecomers. Mayport has been simply a place where the sea and sky informed human life for centuries, and now the Jacksonville Port Authority wants to obliterate that with its ill-advised plans for berthing cruise ships.
