Oman was battered by heavy rains on Thursday as Cyclone Phet approached and the alert level for residents was raised to orange. Residents are advised to move to higher ground away from the coast if they can and to stock up on supplies and stay inside their homes. Some of the residents of Masirah Island have been evacuated.

Muscat airport is currently still open and has no intention to suspend flights at this time.

Phet was expected to veer towards the Indian and Pakistani coasts, sparing Oman a devastating impact similar to that of cyclone Gonu. It tore through Oman in 2007, killing at least 49 people and causing damage worth 3.9 billion dollars.

You can follow Cyclone Phet's progress on the Tropical Storm Risk website.
