Cyclone Phet a Category 4 Cyclone, Expected to Reach Oman June 4
Cyclone Phet is Now a Category 4 Cyclone and is Still Headed For Oman
Cyclone Phet is expected to hit the United Arab Emirates and residents are bracing for the impact of the storm. It is then expected to reach Oman on June 4 with wind speeds over 100mph. It is forecast to make landfall north of Khaluf and could strengthen in to a category 5 storm.
It is expected to weaken somewhere south of Karachi on Sunday June 6.
Oman was battered by heavy rains on Thursday as Cyclone Phet approached and the alert level for residents was raised to orange. Residents are advised to move to higher ground away from the coast if they can and to stock up on supplies and stay inside their homes. Some of the residents of Masirah Island have been evacuated.
Muscat airport is currently still open and has no intention to suspend flights at this time.
Phet was expected to veer towards the Indian and Pakistani coasts, sparing Oman a devastating impact similar to that of cyclone Gonu. It tore through Oman in 2007, killing at least 49 people and causing damage worth 3.9 billion dollars.
