Cyclone Phet to hit Karachi on Friday

According to the AFP, some residents from the island of Masirah are being evacuated and people on the coast are stocking up on supplies and moving to higher ground if they can. Cyclone Phet is about 300 kilometres from Masirah at this time, but according to the projected path on Tropical Storm Risk, Cyclone Phet will become a category 4 storm sometime in the next 12 hours or so.

The hurricane strength winds could last until about Friday and then move northeast before weakening somewhere south of Karachi on Sunday.

In Oman at Oman LNG, the facility for exporting liquefied natural gas, business has not been interrupted but they are monitoring the storm.

"It is business as usual so far with Oman LNG but we are in touch with the authorities to see if there would be any change" Nasser al-Kindy, head of corporate communications at Oman LNG told Reuters.

Oman was battered in 2007 by Cyclone Gonu, which killed 49 people and caused about 3.9 billion dollars worth of damage.

Amy, according to today's papers it is expected that more than 40,000 people will get affected if  'Phet' hits Pakistan’s marine belt. But thankfully the intensity of the cyclone seems to have gone phutt! Here in Karachi, and all other coastal areas of Balochistan and Sindh, those of us who live close to the sea have been expecting the cyclone, the thunderstorm and all the devastation it will wreck on us as we know that despite the government bracing itself to deal with the disaster, it will not be able to fully manage it, and the fisherfolk and the poor will be the worst affected. They already are!

we have had rains all day today...not so common for Karachi. thousands of people have already been evacuated from vulnerable coastal villages, and cyclone Phet is expected to landfall near Karachi sometime today (Sunday) evening. the maximum winds expected are of 100 kilometres (60 miles) per hour and the cyclone could generate waves of up to four metres (over 13 feet).

the latest update from the meteorological dept: the outer circle of the Phet cyclone has hit Thatta and Badin in Sindh while the central circle of the storm will make landfall in two hours. Karachi will not bear the brunt of the storm but Keti Bandar has been evacuated completely by the navy and emergency has been declared and the media has been advised to leave the area
